The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will publish a new report, “Leveraging Advances in Modern Science to Revitalize Low-Dose Radiation Research in the United States” (Press Release).  The committee for “Developing a Long-Term Strategy for Low-Dose Radiation Research in the United States” sponsored by Department of Energy has held study meetings since June, 2021.   

A virtual town hall is scheduled to be held on June 16.  Public comments are gathered via the “Provide feedback on this project” button on this page by June 17, 2022.      

Page 39 of the report includes “BOX 2.1 Radiation Compensation Programs Related to the U.S. Atomic Weapons Program.”  Following that, it says: “Based on the input from community representatives to the committee, it is apparent that there is continuing distrust toward the U.S. government, and there is a belief that the U.S. government has failed to accept responsibility for past radiation exposures and has failed to develop programs that adequately compensate all impacted groups.”
